Deck Reconstruction
After roughly 20 years, this deck needed some major attention. The deck boards were rotting, with some already having been replaced.

The initial plan was to only replace the top decking boards. On first inspection, the framing members appeared to be in relatively good condition. Once the job was seriously under way, it would prove to be quit a bit worse than anticipated.

Tearing out the old lumber would reveal the true condition of the deck.

Unfortunately, the frame had succumbed to the ravages of time. Apart from some of the beams and a few of the joists, most would have to be replaced with new.

The new framing going in. While everything was opened up, I elected to add another support beam across the main part of the deck.
I feel much better already :-)

After finishing the deck repairs, the entire cottage got a fresh paint job with top quality siding paint.

The really fun part of this job was reproducing the funky pattern in the decking.

When rebuilding this part of the deck, I was sure to construct a strong, well supported railing around the hot tub. The original one was no more than 2" x 4"s & 2" x 2"s nailed to the side of the deck. Not the strongest approach, even before the rot set in.
What's my line again? Do it right & make it tight!
